Language Arts in 6th - 8th grades will include grammar, composition, Accelerated Reading, speech, and the reading and study of literature including short stories, novels, and poetry.

Grammar in 6th grade will be the same format as in past years with a topic being introduced and then practiced for several pages. Tests will be given periodically.

Grammar in grades 7 and 8 will be assigned each Monday or the first day of the school week. Each week, five lessons will be completed and graded. Every lesson will cover a variety of subjects but will follow a common format. The items covered will largely be review of subject matter covered in previous years. Tests in grammar will be given every other week.

Composition and speech will be assigned on a regular basis and will often be related to the class literature reading.

Accelerated reading will be part of the gradebook this year. Every student will read one book a month. Some months the books will be from an assigned genre and some months it will be the students' choice. When we read a novel together as a class, that book will count as the AR book for the month. Scores will be entered in the gradebook for the comprehension test as well as any additional assignments given by the teacher.

We will be using the Mos Dos curriculum for much of our literature study and supplementing with novels throughout the school year.

Students will be utilizing interactive notebooks this year in Language Arts to create, write, and record areas of study. These are a way to keep all new information as well as review from class in one place. The notebooks will help your student remain organized and will allow them to use different learning styles to reinforce their learning.
